How to Use

About This Tool

HEIC (HEIF) is what an iPhone saves when Camera → Formats is set to “High Efficiency”. It packs the same quality into far fewer bytes than JPEG, but Windows’ built-in viewer, most web browsers and plenty of CMS upload forms still refuse to open it. In production work this shows up every time as “the client sent photos and none of them will open”.

This tool decodes HEIC with libheif (v1.23.2) compiled to WebAssembly, then writes the pixels back out as JPEG or PNG through the browser’s canvas. Your photos are never sent to a server. Unreleased shots, client material and pictures of people can all be handled without leaving your machine.

When a HEIC holds several images — a burst, for example — the cover (primary) image is the one converted. Rotation recorded in the file (HEIF’s irot/imir) is applied during decoding, so nothing comes out sideways. Note that EXIF is not carried over: going through a canvas drops the capture date and any GPS coordinates. That is handy when you want the location gone, but keep the original HEIC if you need the date (to inspect or strip EXIF from existing JPEGs, use the EXIF Viewer & Remover).

If the images are going on a website, converting the JPEG further to WebP or AVIF will shrink it again at the same apparent quality. For pure resizing and cropping there is the Image Resizer, and for exporting every social platform size at once, Social Image Sizes.
